How to Migrate from Squarespace (or Wix) to Shopify

How we make money: Some links on this page are affiliate links. If you click one and sign up or buy, SwitchMyApps may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Partners don't pay for placement in our guides or approve what we write, and we cover the limits and downsides of every tool, including the ones we earn from. Prices and features change, so check the vendor's site before you decide. Every price on this page lists the date we last verified it.

Quick verdict: should you switch?

Switch if commerce is now the core of your business: you need more apps, deeper inventory and shipping tools, B2B, POS, or multichannel selling. Stay on Squarespace if you mostly run a content or portfolio site with a small shop. Squarespace's Core plan and above already charge 0% online-store transaction fees (source: https://www.squarespace.com/pricing, verified 2026-10-14).

Ready to try it? Start a Shopify trial. Shopify currently advertises a 3-day free trial, then $1/month for 3 months on most plans (source: https://www.shopify.com/pricing, verified 2026-10-14).

Sources: https://www.squarespace.com/pricing and https://www.shopify.com/pricing, both verified 2026-10-14. Wix (yearly billing only): Light $17/mo; Core $14.50/mo (list $29); Business $19.50/mo (list $39); Business Elite $79.50/mo (list $159). The Core, Business and Business Elite prices are a current 50%-off promotion, so compare against the list price for year two (source: https://www.wix.com/plans, verified 2026-10-14).

The honest math: on the like-for-like entry plans, Shopify costs more per month. The switch pays off through conversion, apps, and operations, not through a cheaper subscription. Budget for paid apps too. For example, the Matrixify import app runs $20–$200/mo on paid plans (source: https://apps.shopify.com/excel-export-import, verified 2026-10-14).

Pros and cons of moving

Pros: a much larger app ecosystem; native POS; B2B catalogs (up to 3 on every non-Plus plan); "Sell in AI chats" and marketplace channels; staff accounts on Grow (5) and Advanced (15) (source: https://www.shopify.com/pricing, verified 2026-10-14). Cons: higher base price; you'll likely pay for apps; using a gateway other than Shopify Payments adds a fee; URL structures change (/products/, /pages/), so redirects are mandatory; blog and page content usually has to be rebuilt by hand or with an app.

What transfers and what doesn't

Shopify's own migration guide lists these bulk options (source: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/migrating-to-shopify/store-migration-app, verified 2026-10-14):

DataHow it moves
ProductsProduct CSV, or migration apps
CustomersCustomer CSV, migration apps, Customer API
Historical ordersMigration apps, or the Order/Transaction API (not CSV)
Gift cards / store creditMigration apps, GiftCard API
Blogs, pagesMigration apps, or the Blog/Page API (otherwise copy and paste)
Designs and templates don't transfer. You'll pick a Shopify theme and rebuild.

Before you start: back up and take a URL inventory

  1. Crawl your current site, or export the sitemap (/sitemap.xml), and save every URL to a spreadsheet. You'll need them for redirects.
  2. Export everything Squarespace lets you export (next steps) and keep the files.
  3. Note your top-traffic pages in analytics.

Step 1: Export products from Squarespace

Squarespace exports products to CSV from Products & Services → Products → Export all. This covers physical and service products (up to 10,000), but not digital products, reviews, featured images, alt text or variant images (source: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000694948-Export-products-to-a-csv, verified 2026-10-14). Wix: Products → select → More Actions → Export (up to 5,000 rows per CSV; digital products can't be exported) (source: https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-stores-exporting-products, verified 2026-10-14).

Step 2: Export customers and orders

Export orders from Products & Services → Orders → Export data → Download CSV (source: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206540677-Export-Commerce-orders, verified 2026-10-14) and customers from Contacts → … → Export all contacts (notes and saved addresses aren't included) (source: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/360046485652-The-Contacts-panel, verified 2026-10-14). Order history usually needs an app to import into Shopify (see Step 3).

Step 3: Import into Shopify

Shopify's guide recommends installing the Store Migration app from the Shopify App Store, and importing in this order: products → customers → historical orders, so that orders link correctly (source: Shopify Help Center URL above, verified 2026-10-14). Turn off new-order staff notifications before importing orders, or you'll get one email per imported order (same source).

Options, simplest first: copy/paste → CSV import → migration app → hire a Shopify Partner → custom API work (same source). Third-party tools: Matrixify has a free plan (10 items per file) and paid plans at $20, $50 and $200/mo, with per-file record limits (source: https://apps.shopify.com/excel-export-import, verified 2026-10-14). LitExtension charges a one-time fee by entity count, with self-service migration shown from $59 (source: https://litextension.com/pricing.html, verified 2026-10-14). Cart2Cart also prices by record count through an estimator via an estimator: a sample Squarespace → Shopify store (550 entities) showed self-service from $29 and Expert Migration $299 (source: https://www.shopping-cart-migration.com/migration-pricing, verified 2026-10-14).

Create your Shopify store and run the import on the trial.

Step 4: Verify products

Check prices, weights, inventory, variants, and images. A product missing a variant option won't import and has to be added by hand. Imported products marked hidden won't be published until you make them available on a sales channel (source: Shopify Help Center, verified 2026-10-14).

Step 5: Rebuild pages, blog and design

Pick a free or paid theme. You can preview up to 19 paid themes before buying, and paid themes are non-refundable (source: Shopify Help Center, verified 2026-10-14). Copy policy pages by hand.

Step 6: Set up 301 redirects to keep your SEO

In the Shopify admin: Content → Menus → View URL Redirects → Create URL redirect. You can also import redirects from a CSV (source: Shopify Help Center, verified 2026-10-14). Map every old URL in your inventory to its new URL. Squarespace /shop/p/item paths become /products/item on Shopify This assumes your store page slug is "shop": Squarespace product URLs are /<store-slug>/p/<product> (source: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205815308-URL-mappings, verified 2026-10-14).

Step 7: Move your domain

Disconnect the domain from Squarespace's settings first, or you may hit SSL certificate errors. Then connect it (point DNS) or transfer it to Shopify (source: Shopify Help Center, verified 2026-10-14). To transfer out of Squarespace: Domains → select the domain → turn off Domain Lock → get the EPP code by email → give it to Shopify. Remove DNSSEC and record your DNS settings first. Transfers take up to 15 days (source: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205812338-Transferring-a-domain-away-from-Squarespace, verified 2026-10-14).

Wix → Shopify: what's different

Shopify publishes a dedicated Wix migration guide covering products, customers, reviews (via third-party apps) and orders (source: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/migrating-to-shopify/migrating-from-wix, verified 2026-10-14). It doesn't cover Wix blog posts or Wix apps such as Bookings.

Post-launch checklist

  • Place test orders (successful, failed, refund, partial fulfillment).
  • Set up taxes and shipping zones.
  • Submit yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml in Google Search Console. Shopify generates it automatically, and indexing can take days to weeks (source: Shopify Help Center, verified 2026-10-14).
  • Spot-check your top 20 old URLs to confirm the redirects work.

FAQ

Is there a free way to migrate? Yes. Use CSV export/import for products and customers. Orders and blogs usually need an app or the API. Will I lose my Google rankings? Some movement is normal. Complete 301 redirects are what limit the loss. How long does it take? It depends on catalog size. For a small store, plan on a weekend for data plus a week for design and QA [estimate, not vendor data].
